CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Angie had always been a runner.

She remembered it from long, long ago, in the time before--before she met him. Once upon a time, in high school, she had been... different than this. She had thought differently, lived differently. Those memories were so vague, like they weren't even hers, but she knew she once was a track and field star. A runner.

Now, she was running again, but in a different way. She peered out the window of the apartment she was in. It was a man's apartment--a man who had just brought her in from the streets, after she had posed as a woman who'd been assaulted.

"Do you want some coffee? Water?" the man offered.

Angie was wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt he had given her. She turned to him and smiled. She couldn't stay long... it was too risky. But for a moment, she could take this man's clothes and food and whatever else she could steal to help her out on the streets.

"Oh, no, that's okay," she said. "Just some food, please."

"Of course," the man said, turning back to his kitchen. "You must be so hungry... I'll fix something up for you."

Angie hated him immediately. He was kind--too kind. And he was being nice to her, and that made her suspicious. Why was he being so nice to her? Did he know something she didn't?

"You must have been so scared," the man said, talking over the sound of his cooking. "I mean, I can't even imagine..."

"It's okay," Angie said, but as she said it, she could hear the lie in her own voice.

She didn't want to be here. Not with this man.

"Oh..." the man said, pausing. "I'm sorry..."

And he was sorry, Angie knew.

The man had been so kind to her, but she could feel him pulling away. The kindness was wearing off, and he was starting to see her for what she was.

"Are you sure you don't want me to call the police?" the man asked. "I mean, I'm happy to help however I can, but it sounds like you've been through something so traumatic..."

No. No police. This guy was nice, too nice, and he was going to call the fucking police and ruin everything.

She had clothes. That... that was enough. Forget the food.

While the man's back was turned and he was still talking, Angie slipped out the door. She found herself in the apartment hallway, and once she was free, she made a run for it.

She heard him yell something after her, but she didn't stop. She ran to the elevator and stepped in, hitting the button for the ground floor.

She was down the hall and out the front door of the apartment building before she knew it. She made it down to the sidewalk and... nothing.

It was dark out there; the streets were empty.

No people. No cars.

Now what?

Her stomach growled. She hadn't eaten in a while.

She could use some food. If she went back to the man's apartment, he would probably let her have some food, but she didn't want to go through that in case he did call the police.
